If I save an essay in Microsoft Word in ".rtf", will it erase footnotes and

double spacing? I saved an essay with the cheap online version calles Open Office. As an ".rtf" it would not save some features like footnotes and double spacing. If I buy Microsoft Word wont it do the same because it basically turns it into a Word Pad document? Or is MW better?
