As an IT tutor I always believe in teaching the right way to use a program, even if it is going to be used only at basic level. With PowerPoint this means setting up your Master slide as the very first thing before you enter any text or images. By using a master you have conformity in the style, size, colouring etc without every time you insert a new slide thinking what font and size did I use last time.

You do not say what version you have, but if pre 2007 up to View on the menu bar, down to Master and across to Slide Master. If you want your title placeholder to be a certain font, size and colour you alter it here, also the bullet points. If you want to alter background colour, you do it here. To insert a picture which you want to appear on all slides, insert it here.

You will see that you have three boxes in the footer of your slide for date, left side, whatever you want in the middle, such as file name, your name etc. and the right side is the slide number. However, rather than typing it in there, I would suggest going up to View header and footer, clicking on automatic date, update so the date goes in, type what you want in the footer, which is the middle box, and click on slide number. Then, before you click apply to all and the OK button, clickon the tab at the top, Note and Handouts because if you want things in the footer part, and you are going to print out audience notes, you repeat what you just did here as well. Then click apply to all and OK and all slides current and future that you insert will conform to the master.

If you are 2007 it is a bit more complicated as you have loads of masters which I find unnecessary, so delete all of them, save for the first.
