im really confused what is the point of the font

No, it is not a language. Webdings and Wingdings give you many commonly used (and less commonly used) symbols and they are for web use, so that you can insert say a picture of a plane and have it only take a few bytes to download rather than a bitmap taking a few kilobytes or more. Need a simple "No smoking" sign?, maybe a heart, club or diamond, get them faster.

It's a throwback to the "dingbats" of the old typesetting days with presses, which are typesetters page decorations to fill space and pad.
