Default Vista service pack 1 major problem?

I tried to install Vista service pack 1 the day it was released. It would get to step 3 100%, then it would say "Service pack did not install.Reverting changes.Do not shut off your computer." I tried to install it twice with the same result.Last night I restarted my pc for the first time since I had tried installing the service pack. The boot screen came up, then a black screen with an error window in it which said "Windows needs to be reactivated. Please insert your Windows DVD or CD to reinstall windows." In the bottom corner of this screen it said: Windows version 6.006 This copy of windows is not genuine. I spent 3 hours trying to start windows from my vista cd and finally I was able to get to my desktop. I did numerous deep scans both in normal and safe mode with Bitdefender and it found nothing.I did spyware scans with my PC Tools Spyware Doctor and it found nothing. My copy of vista IS genuine, it came with my pc which I bought brand new from MDG.
My question is: Could I have a virus or did service pack 1 completely screw up my pc? I do not want to try to install service pack 1 again. I do not know what to do.

I'd try calling microsoft for tech support - sounds like a pretty serious problem. Sorry I can't be any more useful!! You could also try speaking to MDG if the computer's brand new.

I installed on of the Beta Versions of SP1 just fine. it did take a while. I have been holding off on SP1 (the complete version I guess). You don't HAVE to install SP1 again right away. It probably well prompt you for it updates for a good while. I'm just not rushing out to install it yet (I have already uninstalled the beta I had). I'll probably give it a month and then install it.
I doubt its a virus. Probably just some major parts of your OS were changes that Vista (being safe) had to register your copy of windows again. If it is working fine now, let it be for a while. Get any other updates, but just leave SP1 alone for now.
