There are many things that could be done, first of all, vista is terrible, I don't like having it cause of all the problems it is dealing to people. Anyways, try going into your control panel and than your hardware and sound, after that go to sound, there is a test option and see if it will produce sound through that, if not than you trouble shoot from there, by checking to see if everything looks correct, if you are still having issues email me at kky2kgod@yahoo.com and I will help you.

what kinda of sound card do u have?
go to star..right click on my computer...select properties....select device manager..select hardware...scroll down until u see...SOUND..click the little plus sign and it will tell you what sound card u have..u can try to right click and UPDATE DRIVER but that probally wont work.
go to the sound cards web site and click on ..help and support
most likely u will be given the option to enter your make and model and download the drivers for it
example
here is realtek sound drivers
(this might not be want u have) just a example
now select your operating system and press download
here is the best place to go though after u find your make n model number
