Default Windows Vista Set Up Help?

Okay, here's my problem. I've never had it before, so not sure what to do....I got a new dell computer about a month ago, and it has Vista. I've never used Vista before. Anyway, I've NEVER had a problem with hearing someone talk on a mic until I got this computer and Vista. I can't hear someone when they call via yahoo messenger or msn, what do I do? It says that there is no voice detected or speakers or whatever. I don't have a mic, but I never needed a mic before and I heard people just fine. I have speakers that are plugged in and playing music as we speak. I know there is something I need to set up, but I have no clue what, or how? Please help. I need to communicate with some friends in Iraq.
What kind of driver?
