Default Windows Media Center for Vista?

okay... so i have a Windows XP desktop and a Windows Vista 64-bit laptop.

when i got my desktop like 5 years ago, my sister told me i had to record something on tv, then burn it to a dvd to make a "key" in case something happened to my media center on the XP. i never did it and then my media center messed up and there's no way of fixing it.

now, i have Vista on my laptop and i have media center on here. do i have to make that "key" in case anything happens?
i made my recovery disc's. its different from what i'm talking about.
