Ubuntu is a great operating system. I am using it right now,so let me be the first one to tell you, good choice! Anyway, this will be easy. Just follow the steps and you will have Ubuntu up in no time.

1. Make sure you meet the system requirements: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements.

2. Go to http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download. Judging by what you told me about your computer, you will probably want to get the standard personal computer image (x86). Just so you know, an image is a large file that contains everything needed to install and operating system.

3. You will need a special program to burn the image. Information on how to do this is here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

4. Make sure that the download is not corrupted by doing a check sum. Instructions on how to do this is here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

5. Now, this is where it gets sticky. You are going to have to edit your BIOS settings (the thing on your computer that loads an operating system) to let you boot from a CD. You might want to get someone with some know-how in this area as altering the BIOS is different for each computer model. If a fellow geek is not readily available try this page: http://www.cyberwalker.com/article/28. Just so you know, you are changing the boot sequence so that it will boot from a CD first. If a CD is not an option, you are going to be in some trouble as you will need to do it with floppy disks. Yuck! Anyway, instructions on how to do that are here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SmartBootManagerHowto.

6. Put in the disk and restart your computer. If all went well, your computer will open up the live copy of the OS (this means that it is running from the disk). Instructions on how to do this are here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GraphicalInstall

7. Make sure everything is working and run the graphical install (see the above link).

8. Enjoy your new operating system!

Just boot off the Ubuntu disk and have the Ubuntu installer delete the partitions and create new ones.
