I have a older computer that i'm trying to hook up a LAN to, I have the 10/100 card installed and a router. My newer desktop and laptop works great but i can not get my old windows 95 to connect to the internet at all. What do I have to do to get LAN internet on windows 95?
I wasn't planing on upgrading anything, where ever i try to go to a website, an error comes up (Internet Explorer could not open the search page) I have Internet Explorer 5 on it. ??? |

Win95 originally seemed unaware of LANs until later updates, especially with the IE 5.0 that came with it (if you reinstalled Windows). Not sure if it was an update to IE 5.5 or 6.0 that resolved that or some other update. But Netscape worked fine even when IE or any other app that used IE could not find the internet on a LAN.
But first make sure your network card is working. Assuming you set it to get an IP automatically, do Start, Run, winipcfg and see if your network device has a IP, gateway, DNS. If you assign an IP manually, you also have to manually set gateway (router LAN IP) and nameservers (in some cases you can use LAN IP of router, which would handle or relay DNS requests). |
