Default Having boot problems with my Windows XP Home Edition Laptop?!!??! Help me!!?

My laptop (Toshiba Series #: Satellite A104 - S4164) can not boot up on Windows XP home edition. When I turn the computer on, the first screen came showing: "In Touch With Tomorrow, Toshiba" On the bottom, it showed: "Press F2 for system uttilites or F12 for Boot menu. It goes to a blank screen and stays blank for 4 - 5 minutes, then it shows an error message saying:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Please re-install a copy of the file above.

I have one CD that I can re-install my laptop, but I don't want loose all my data. Can you please suggest me how I can have my laptop back to normal? Please help me! If you need more info send me a message.
