Default Slow computer, would changing from Windows XP to Windows 95 help?

My computer is getting along in age. It's a little over 3 years old; a Dell Inspiron laptop with a 1.6 GHz processor, 256MB of memory, and about a 40GB drive. I've kept it up to date with all the latest software releases - everything but Explorer 7. Still, it has gotten irritably slow as of late. I only use it for the internet, MS Word now and then for homework, and my ipod / iTunes. The few photos I care to save can easily be backed up.

It has, to date, been running perfectly. As trusty a computer as I could ever have asked for.

My question is whether I should format the drive and install Windows 95. Should I? My objective is to get this thing to breeze along at a [significantly] better clip. Any thoughts, ideas, and suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.
