Default windows xp professional 64 or 32 bit?

What is the difference between 32 bit and 64 bit. I am currently running xp 32 bit, but have just purchased a 64 bit copy. will my existing peripherals and hardware still work with 64 bit.
Pros and cons of changing over please.

32 is faster, because it doesn't use all the hardware that 64bit uses, it's generally faster, unless your top of the line, just go w/ 32bit, it's the same thing really.
