In trying to install standard sw (e.g. new webcam driver), XP gives error 1618 and this message: Another installation is already in progress. Complete that installation before proceeding with this install. Of course, without telling me what the installation to complete is. What shall i do to sort this mess out?

just restart your machine and retry,
if that fails try to open your task manager and end task any unknown programs
